Minister looking at ways to help fishermen due to closures
Federal fisheries minister Dominic LeBlanc says his department is looking at ways to help ease the economic hardship caused by the continuing closure of fishing zones.
The closures are meant to protect the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale.
LeBlanc said the help will likely not take the form of direct financial compensation.
Instead he is looking at ways to help processing plant workers qualify for employment insurance. And he is considering making up for the closures by adding dates to the fall season.
