MLA takes province to task over hotel levy
The MLA for Southwest Miramichi-Bay du Vin is accusing the Gallant government of holding back the province's tourism industry.
In a release issued yesterday, Jake Stewart takes the government to task for deciding not to implement a hotel levy, where a percentage of a hotel rate would be added to a customer's bill.
The revenue would have then been used for tourism marketing.
The Tourism Industry Association of New Brunswick had been pushing for the levy. Board chair Dan Myers told the media they were blindsided by the announcement and that it was like a bullet in the back.
In his statement, Stewart called the move a callous disregard for tourism businesses.
He also said the government is holding the industry back and putting it at a competitive disadvantage.
