Council plans to phase out grants
City council served notice Tuesday night that their days of providing grants to non-profits are numbered.
The city was set to vote grants budget of $78,500 during a special council meeting..
But before they could do that, Deputy Mayor Brian King asked that $5000 be added for the local football program.
Council was split on the idea, voting 4-4. That forced Mayor Adam Lordon to cast the deciding vote, approving the addition.
Council then passed a grants budget of $83,500.
However, several councillors expressed a desire to end the grants program moving forward
The mayor noted that Miramichi is one of the few communities that continues to provide such grants.
He said in the future, a new data driven program will likely be used for providing funding for projects and events.
